Did his brother die because they could not afford to buy medicine or did he die because he had leukemia and despite having best treatment it was just his time?
Where did he swim (sea of garbage)? At that time 50s and 60s Philippines was not yet as polluted.
He lived in Tondo, but not the slums part. And living in Tondo does not make you poor.
