Latin singer Ricky Martin says he is gay

LOS ANGELES - Latin pop star Ricky Martin on Monday announced he was gay in a blog posting, ending years of speculation.

"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Martin wrote in a blog posting at www.rickymartinmusic.com.

"This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with," Martin wrote.

Martin, 38, became a father to twin sons via a surrogate in 2008 and at the time no details were given about the birth or the mother.

The Puerto Rican singer of hits such as "Livin' la Vida Loca," has long been the subject of speculation about his sexuality. In 2000, TV journalist Barbara Walters grilled him about whether he was gay, but he refused to disclose it.

In his posting on Monday, Martin said a few months ago he had decided to write a memoir and doing so brought him closer to what he called "an amazing turning point in my life."

"Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating," he wrote.

The singer began his career with boy band Menudo and broke out as a solo artist and teen idol in the 1990s in Spanish-speaking countries.

He released his first, English-language album in 1999, the self-titled "Ricky Martin," which saw two major hits, "Livin' la Vida Loca" and "She's All I Ever Had." Since then, Martin has been a star in both North America and South America.

Jarrett Barrios, the president of the U.S.-based Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation , welcomed what he called Martin's "openness and honesty."

SKorean actor commits suicide 2 years after sister

SEOUL, South Korea – Reports say the brother of a South Korean movie star who committed suicide two years ago has killed himself in Seoul.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency cited an unnamed police official as saying that 39-year-old Choi Jin-young was found dead Monday morning and that he had apparently hanged himself.

Choi was an actor and singer known but was mostly known as the younger brother of Choi Jin-sil, one of South Korea's most famous actresses. She committed suicide in 2008, also at the age of 39.

South Korea has the highest rate of suicide among nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a consortium of the world's leading industrialized countries.

2nd blue moon due Tuesday; 3 planets to be visible

Stargazers will have a chance to see the last of this year’s exceptional blue moon phenomenon on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Aside from the rare phenomenon, stargazers would also have the chance to see Uranus, Neptune and Venus before dawn on the same day.

PAGASA head Prisco Nilo said the occurrence of a blue moon - two full moons in one month - on March 1 and 30 is the second since January this year.

“The next blue moon will be on August 2 and 31, 2012," Nilo said in PAGASA’s astronomical diary for March. On the average, a blue moon takes place once every two and a half years.

Literally blue

PAGASA noted that since the moon takes 29.5 days to circle the Earth once in its orbit, it is possible that two full moons can occur within the same calendar month, like what happened last January when the moon was full on the 1st and the 30th, making the full moon on the 30th a “blue moon."

Nilo also said there have been times when the moon does seem to have a blue color due to dust particles in the atmosphere that scatter light. The effects of this dust on the light coming from the moon can cause it to appear bluish in color.

He cited the eruption of the Krakatoa Volcano in 1883 that gave us one such “blue moon."

“For about 24 months after this volcano erupted, the dust it spewed into the upper atmosphere which caused the moon to appear green and blue when viewed from around the world," he said.

3 planets visible

Pagasa said Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune may be "visible" at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. At that time, it said the three would be at 3, 10 and 30 degrees above the east southeastern horizon and would be glowing at magnitude +8.0, -2.0 and +5.9, respectively.

“Jupiter and Neptune will lie among the background stars of the constellation Capricornus, the Sea-Goat while Neptune will be found among the stars of the constellation Pisces, the Fish," it said.

PAGASA, however, said that a modest-size telescope would be needed to observe Neptune, the Blue-Green planet, while Uranus would be difficult to observe due to its proximity to the sun. – KBK/RSJ, GMANews.TV

Asada finally beats Kim in figure-skating worlds

In the World Figure Skating Championships that immediately follow the Olympics, the winner is quite often not the world's best skater, but the one who handles Olympic fatigue and the stress of a lengthened season the best.

Today in Torino, that was Japanese Olympic silver medalist Mao Asada. She won gold, beating Kim Yu-Na by nearly seven points.

Asada, who has spent much of her career in Kim's shadow, skated an aggressive, graceful routine. She completed two triple Axels, an incredibly difficult jump to perform even once, and had flawless footwork and spirals. Unfortunately, her second triple Axel was downgraded to a double, but that didn't keep her from winning gold.

Olympic champion Kim falters, still wins silver

Kim, fresh off her gold medal at the Olympics, had a disastrous World Championships. She came into the free skate in seventh place after making small but costly errors in the short program. In Saturday's free skate, she fell on a triple salchow and singled a planned triple Axel. With the routine that broke records in Vancouver, she scored a mere 130.49, nearly 20 points lower than the Olympics.

Kim showed why many Olympic champions choose to forgo the world championships. Her fellow Vancouver champions, Evan Lysacek in men's and Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao in pair's, both skipped the worlds, though ice dancing gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir did compete and win gold. The last ladies' champion to compete in the worlds after winning Olympic gold was Kristi Yamaguchi in 1992; she won the championships.

What's so shocking about seeing Kim falter is that it just doesn't happen. During this competitive skating season, she won gold in every competition she entered. Since entering the senior circuit, she has never finished off the podium. Kim is lucky to escape with the silver.
Powered by a solid short program, Laura Lepisto, who took sixth in the Olympics, won bronze for Finland, edging out Japan's Miki Ando. Her triple-triple combo soared through the air, and she cleanly landed the triple lutz, a jump that has given her problems in the past.

Jerry Yan talks about his girl woes and a broken nose

Apart from being a rebellious teenager who partook in gang activities when he was younger, Taiwanese actor-singer Jerry Yan unknowingly dated a gang leader's girlfriend and ended up with a broken nose.

Jerry came clean about his wild and rebellious past in his latest photo book, 9314 Man and Boy. The 33-year-old artiste described his high school years as a colourful one where he "had two different identities for school and after school." He was a class monitor and goody-two-shoes in school, and became the underling of a gang after classes ended.

The strapping tall actor reckoned that growing up in a single-parent family has instilled "a fear of isolation" within him, and he wanted to "find a sense of belonging" somewhere.

A popular figure in school, Jerry recalled that one of the school belles had feelings for him but the good-looking one "did not read too much into it as I was busy doing odd jobs." One evening, he met that girl at the school gate and thought that she was the girl mentioned in the rumours. He eventually fell for her and the pair began meeting one another on the sly.

Drama ensued when Jerry discovered that he was dating a two-timing girl who had a gang leader boyfriend. He later suffered a broken nose after receiving a bashing from the gang leader's underlings.

Rags to riches

In an interview with NHK news a few days ago, Taiwanese actor-singer Jerry Yan poignantly touched on his growing-up years in a single-parent family.

Before Jerry shot to stardom from his breakout role in Meteor Garden back in 2001, the 33-year-old actor shared that he had an impoverished childhood growing up in a single-parent family. Jerry's father passed away due to an illness when the actor was 12 years old, and his mother singlehandedly raised him and his sister up by doing tailoring work.

The suave and charming idol revealed that he started doing odd jobs when he was in Primary 5 to help with the household expenses. He said that the refrigerator at home was so old that it started to leak electricity, and that cement would sometimes drip from the ceiling at home.

Referring his mother as "the most important woman in my life", he shared that the deepest impression he had of her was "the view of her back."

"Mom would always be sitting down for long periods of time while tailoring the clothes and my elder sister and I would be at one corner doing household chores," he said.

Inspired to provide his mother with a better life, Jerry has no qualms working hard and spending his income on his mother. To shield her from the limelight, he will "reject all promotional events and advertorials that have requested for us to appear together."

He is the first Chinese star to be interviewed on the NHK program and the episode will be aired in Japan on the 27th this month. He was introduced as one of the "Top Stars" in the Chinese pop culture scene.

The world's only immortal animal

The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth.

Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).

The key lies in a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. Turritopsi nutricula, on the other hand, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process.

Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They're now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters. "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.

Sandra Bullock Has Left the Family Home

Actress Sandra Bullock has left the Los Angeles home she shares with husband Jesse James amid rumors he had had an affair, People.com reports.

A source tells the magazine Bullock, 45, left on Monday. The Oscar-winning star also abruptly canceled a trip to London to attend the premiere of her film "The Blind Side."

A tattoo model gave an exclusive interview to In Touch magazine, detailing her account of the alleged affair.

Bullock and James met in 2004 during a tour of the set of the James' Discovery Channel show, "Monster Garage." The couple married a year later.

James has been by his wife's side through her awards season ride, culminating with her winning the Oscar for Best Actress. Her emotional speech honoring him and their marriage was a highlight.

HOLLYWOOD—Boxing pundits were nearly unanimous in praising Manny Pacquiao’s total domination of Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey in Texas Saturday night.

But Floyd Mayweather Jr. was unimpressed, claiming that Clottey “exposed” Pacquiao as a one-dimensional fighter despite failing to wrest the Filipino superstar’s World Boxing Organization welterweight crown.

“Personally, I think Pacquiao got exposed in that fight for being one-dimensional,” Mayweather told Tom Jenkins of Cagereport.net “You can have all [the] offense ability in the world, but with no defense, you’re not going to last long against a good counter puncher such as myself.”

Mayweather said Clottey, despite keeping a defensive shell all fight long, hurt Pacquiao in the few times he went on the offensive.

“Each time (Clottey) threw something, it landed,” the still unbeaten American said. “Then at the end, Pacquiao’s was all busted up.

Excuses?

Joshua Clottey has partly blamed his defeat to Manny Pacquiao in the WBO welter weight bout on a meal he ate hours before the bout.

Clottey was less than impressive on the night and was hugely overwhelmed by the Philippine who was devastating with his punches from start to finish.

The Ghanaian boxer shortly after his defeat apologized to Ghanaians for failing to dethrone the undisputed welter weight champion but appears to have diagnosed the reason for his defeat.

Speaking to Joy News, the 32 year old Ghanaian boxer said he was not in the right frame of mind after suffering multiple stomach upsets and diarrhea prior to the bout.

He suspected an ingredient used in preparing local Ghanaian dish- Banku and Okro stew he ordered to be prepared for him to eat as possible cause for the diarrhea.

“When I ate after the weighing I was ‘running’; the midnight I went to toilet almost like four times; in the morning I went to toilet almost like three times; when we went to the dressing room I went to toilet like three times,” he explained.

He said the heavy dose of diarrhea weakened him ahead of the bout and that partly contributed to his defeat.

He has promised to make a swift comeback to glory.

Jerry Yan reminded of failed romance at Kaohsiung

The cast and crew of Taiwanese romantic-comedy drama series, Down With Love, which includes the likes of Jerry Yan, Ella Chen, Xiao Xiao Bin, Kelly Huang, and Michael Zhang, trooped down to Kaohsiung and spent a memorable White Valentine's Day with fans in the area. Although the weather was scorching hot last Sunday, there was a surprising turnout of more than a thousand fans.

33-year-old Jerry was reminded of his sad past in Kaohsiung when he was still a marine soldier many years ago. His girlfriend left him and Jerry confessed that he had "a very painful time" and even wanted to "jump into the sea and commit suicide." The dashing actor wanted to win his girlfriend over with a proposal but faced rejection from her.

Putting his unhappy past behind him, Jerry said, "Today is supposed to be a happy day. Let's not talk about unhappy matters."

In one of the chapters from Jerry's upcoming photobook, 9314 Man and Boy, the heartthrob briefly mentioned about "her" and felt that he was "too childish, too in love" and decided to part ways with "her" as he wanted her to have better options.

The "her" mentioned in Jerry's book is speculated to be Taiwanese super model-actress, Lin Chi-ling. Jerry refuted the speculations saying, "I have never said that it was her."

And does he intend to pursue her?
