We had a team lunch to celebrate the last day of Chinese New Year at the newly opened Tong Le Private Dining at the Rotating Restaurant at the CBD.

Ambience and View was FAB!

Sparkling water and hot towel to begin lunch

We begin with Yu Sheng. It's the fanciest I've ever had!

This is the weirdest ever! Duck tongue. My Chinese colleague tricked me to eat it saying it's not really duck tongue and that it's just a type of veggie. But ewww. It's really duck and it has tiny bones. It's not bad tasting but it was disgusting to think that I ate a duck's tongue.

And together the 2nd meal of the day looks like this:

The soup was very tasty. But I felt very guilty eating shark's cartilage.

Huge plate, tiny fish. But tasty just the same.

Alas! I guess we are all not cultured enough that we wondered how come they are serving dessert in the middle of the meal. And? It's to cleanse your palate! I LOVED it!

Oyster, mushroom and another whatever on a winter melon. It's probably the worst dish of the day and the only one that I didn't finish.

The rice crackers on top was a great idea. It gave the rice dish crispy and crunchy feel. Oh so yummy!

And we come to dessert. Well I hate mangoes that don't come from the Philippines coz it tastes like medicine and this one do taste like medicine. :(

We ended the meal with tea and coffee. I had to take 2 sticks of sugar because the coffee was too strong.

I'm not sure of the pricing as it was a company sponsored lunch. But not knowing the price makes it easier for me. Haha. It may look small but it was a very very filling lunch and a good one too!

When I first saw the poster I tot it would be of decent size. Was shocked to see it just slightly bigger than a cupcake. Got it for a friend's birthday celebration and boy was it an epic failure.

It crumbled when we punched a candle. And inside was melted ice cream! EPIC! So our joke of the night? Romeo was small and soft. :p

Bicol dish thus Bicol term. Not entirely sure how to translate it except that I know that Tutong is burned. My friend cooked it yesterday and it was so AWESOME! I can't really recall all the steps but I did see her do the following:

Start a charcoal fire (we used 2-3 pieces of charcoal and created the fire on a conventional stove)
Chop garlic and onion
Cut the papaya into thin slices (about $3 for a small green fruit)
Wash the chicken thoroughly (1 whole chicken is about $5 in Fair Price)
But the "fired-up" charcoal on the Grated coconut (we used 4 packs $0.95 at Fair Price per pack). Create that burnt coconut feel. :)
Squeeze the grated coconut in 1 cup of hot/warm water. (Tama bang squeeze? Pigain ang nyog hang gang lumabas lahat ng gata! hehe)
Saute garlic and onion in a little oil
Add the chicken
Add the squeezed coconut milk
Add a little vinegar and pepper
Boil until chicken is cooked and papaya is soft

Trust me. This dish was SO GOOD. It was literally gone after few minutes!

I asked a friend for the recipe instead of following an online one for this. And boy was it so GOOD!

Begin by cleaning the chicken and gizzard thoroughly (half chicken $3.50, gizzard was $0.80 from Fair Price)
Chop onion (half) and garlic (3-4 cloves)
Cut the ginger (I used half of what I got for $0.70)
Cut sayote in cubes ($1 a piece)
Saute onion, garlic and ginger
Add chicken (cook until white but not fried)
Add chicken broth and water
Add 1 knorr chicken cube
Boil
Add the sayote
Boil
Add pepper and a little more ginger for taste

Serve while hot. All in all I spent $5.30 for this dish and we had it for 2 nights. :)

Nirunot na Talong

This is my mom's recipe. Translation : Dinurog na Talong (Crushed Talong).

Procedure is very simple.

Boil the Talong. Let it cool then peel.

Add 1 chopped tomato.

Add 1/2 chopped onion.

Add 6-12 pieces of small lime.

Add a dash of salt and pepper.

Serve and enjoy!

A friend posted her own version of Biko so I was inspired to make mine too. And as always, I followed Panlasang Pinoy's recipe:

Ingredients

2 cups glutinous rice (aka sticky rice or malagkit)
1 1/2 cups water
2 cups brown sugar
4 cups coconut milk
1/2 tsp salt

Cooking Procedure

Combine the sticky rice and water in a rice cooker and cook until the rice is ready (we intentionally combined lesser amount of water than the usual so that the rice will not be fully cooked)
While the rice is cooking, combine the coconut milk with brown sugar and salt in a separate pot and cook in low heat until the texture becomes thick. Stir constantly.
Once the rice is cooked and the coconut milk-sugar mixture is thick enough, add the cooked rice in the coconut milk and sugar mixture then mix well. Continue cooking until all the liquid evaporates (but do not overcook).
Scoop the cooked biko and place it in a serving plate then flatten the surface.
Share and Enjoy!

I wanted to make the sweet brown topping but failed. Epic failure again hahaha. Anyway, here's my end product:

For topping I mixed condensed milk, coconut milk and a little brown sugar. Let it boil then baked until brown. That's it. :)

Here's how much I spent:

Gluti rice - $1.45 but I used only 2 cups ( I still have 5 cups)

Condensed milk - $1 but I use 1/3 only

Coconut milk - $1.60

Coconut cream - $0.90 (I used only half)

Brown sugar - $2.70 (I used only 2 cups - still got a LOT!)

I made this! Beautiful right?!

I bought a pack of mint leaves (huge pack costs only $0.70 from Shen Siong), a small can of 7-up ($0.60) and lime juice ($2 - still lots of it at the fridge). We manage to create 3 glasses of this yummy refreshing drink. With lots of mint leaves and lime juice left.

Very simple really.

Wash the leaves carefully
Rub a leaf or two around the glass tip
Put 2-3 leaves at the bottom of the glass
Add lime juice (about 2-3 tablespoon)
Add some ice
Mix carefully (try not to crush the leaves)
Add 7-up
Garnish with more mint leaves

Personal Tip

Freeze the lime juice and 7-up to create that crushed ice effect

Palitaw is a popular snack in the Philippines. It's a flat sweet rice cake. I was craving for it the other day so I decided to give it a try.

I followed Panlasang Pinoy's Recipe:

Ingredients:
2 cups glutinous rice flour
½ cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
½ cup sesame seeds, roasted
1 cup grated coconut

Cooking procedure:

1. Combine glutinous rice flour with water and mix until a dough is formed.

2. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough then mold it into a ball-shaped figure.

3. Flatten the ball-shaped dough using the palm of your hands.

4. Boil water in a cooking pot then put-in the flattened dough.

5. When the flattened dough starts to float, remove them from the pot and set it aside allowing water to drip.

6. Combine sugar and roasted sesame seeds then mix well.

7. Dunk the rice cake in grated coconut then in the sugar-sesame seed mixture.

8. Arrange in a serving plate then serve. Share and enjoy!

Tips from experience:

Slowly combine the flour with the water. Don't pour all the water at once. My first try was a huge failure. It was so watery that I couldn't shape it. Epic fail.
For those in Singapore, I got the glutinous flour from Shen Shiong for less than $2. A pack of flour is about 12 cups.
The grated coconut gets easily spoiled even though the expiration date says otherwise. It was sour smelling already the next day. A waste of $1.20. My next batches didn't include the coconut and it tasted just as good.
Remember to let the rice cake cool. If it's still hot and you dip it in the sesame seed and sugar mixture it melts the sugar and it becomes runny and disgusting.

Authentic Kopi. I was so amazed by the way they presented it but I got scared too coz it seemed like a dangerous way of drinking kopi. My local friend this is how they serve kopi for take away before the plastic became popular.

My friend said maybe it's cold where they came from since it's a hairy crab. But.. I was amused that it's labeled Herry Crab at Sheng Sheong. Was it a case of wrong spelling or what?

We celebrated CNY in the office yesterday. My boss' first Yu Sheng. Never won any ampao but it was a fun event.

My recent addiction --- pancakes! I love this Aunt Jemima's pancake! Yum yum!

My recent purchase! It was on sale at $18 at Isetann. I love that the actual seasoning fitted perfectly. Even my vanilla and panda extract fitted perfectly inside the tube. Niiiice!

Still on CNY, they raffled a few items. And I won this mushroom. I never win raffles. Then I did today and it's a mushroom. Just my luck.

We welcomed the Chinese New Year today (coz it's a Saturday!) with loud thunder and lightnings. It was so scary that we closed all windows including curtains! I guess it's welcoming the new year with a big bang!

Well, I'm feeling better these days. Still hurts sometimes, contractions is what my hubby calls it. But I can generally move around and do light houseworks. I have a month leave but I feel better so I'm going back to work after CNY, 2 weeks after the operation. :)

Just finished watching all episodes of the Season 1 of High School of the Dead. Pretty good series but --- bitin.

The story follows a group of high school students, the high school's nurse, and a young girl as they fight their way to safety through the deadly streets of Japan during a worldwide catastrophic event known as the "Outbreak". I'm home! My surgery went well. I reached the hospital at around 2pm, they did a pre-screening test on me. One of the tests was for my blood count since I've earlier been diagnosed for having low blood count.

At 230pm, we went to admission and signed few docs and settled the pre-admission bills (which I luckily didn't have to pay coz I got LOG from the company). A nurse came to send us to our assigned room. They gave us just enough time to settle in before another nurse came for the pre-surgery interview. She asked basically the same questions as the first nurse. The helped me change to the hospital gown and clean up.

At around 415pm, 2 other nurse assistants came to pick me up and send to the surgery room. It was a funny feeling lying down and traveling just a floor. Felt a little dizzy at the elevator. I was sent to the ward to rest and relax before the surgery. It was so quite and cold that I dozed off. Bad decision. Because I didn't have enough time to react when the doctors came to fetch me. I just found myself whisked to the surgery room. A nurse was reading a paper asking if I know what's gonna be done to me, etc etc. Then I felt the doctor put the dextrose needle (I dunno what it's called).

I woke up around 8-830pm. A little drowsy and giddy. Heavy on the tummy area, painful shoulders. Dry mouth. A little headache. And bleeding.

It was tough sleeping in the hospital. Every 30 minutes the nurses come and check and so I couldn't properly sleep. Going to the bathroom was a challenge.

But overall, it was a good surgery. I'm home now. Feeling bloated.

Curly Hair

I've always had a straight hair so having a curly hair is always a dream. I tried once but my hair is too thin and too weak that it started to fall. Tried this curler at my friend's place. It wasn't very effective coz our hairs were totally dry. Guess it will work better when the hair is at least 30% wet. But worth another try next time. :D

WetMarket Adventure in SG

Back in the Philippines, the wet markets open very early (sometimes as early as 4AM!) and the earlier you get there, the fresher the goods will be. Thinking that SG would be the same, my friends and I decided to venture into an adventure. We agreed to meet at 5:30AM at the MRT to go to Tekka Market for marketing.

Tekka Market is conveniently located in Little India. The prices are cheaper than the supermarkets and the goods are definitely fresher. You also get to purchase in small sizes/pieces (compared to pre-packed items at the supermarkets).

Okay, so here comes the fun part:

Our feeder bus does not operate so early. At 5:15AM, the bus assistant says next bus is 49 minutes while the other buses are not operating.
I was deciding whether to take taxi or just walk (since my friend also has to wait for the LRT opening)
LRT does not open so early. The earliest is at 5:40AM.
I walked and got lucky to find a different bus operating already at the hour going to the MRT, I reached MRT just before quarter to 6.
Majority like 95% of the passengers were senior citizens.
The MRT, even though open, is as good as not because the next train was 27 minutes later. Gosh!
The MRT has a lot of sleepy passengers at the hour (or maybe some pretending and just looking for a free skin connection)
Tekka is a bit messy so early in the morning because the vendors are still preparing

Despite the 1.5 hours travel time, it was still a success. And it was fun to be with the girls too! Here's my loot:

For this trip, I spent:

$12 for the beef.. it should be 1.1kg
$1.50 for the fish
$7.05 for the veggies

For that amount, I'll get:

Lunch + Dinner : Nilaga
Lunch + Dinner : Salpicao
Lunch + Dinner : Beef Steak
Lunch + Dinner: Fried Fish
Lunch + Dinner: Another round of nilaga
Lunch + Dinner : Beef Tapa

Therefore, 6 days worth of food. How awesome is that?

Without a doubt, the best show on ABS CBN's prime time block these days. The weakest link? Assunta de Rossi. She's not supposed to be this irritating because she's the lead actress mom. Instead of hating Angel Aquino, viewers end up hating her for her irritating presence and loud and "squatter" acting (even if in the story they already are well-off). Fail.

Laparoscopic Myomectomy

The advantage of a laparoscopic myomectomy over an abdominal myomectomy is that several small incisions are used rather than one larger incision. The disadvantage is that only small fibroids can be removed by laparoscopic myomectomy and it is not recommended if there are many fibroids or if the fibroids are deeply embedded in the uterine wall. Laparoscopic surgery is usually performed as out-patient surgery under general anesthesia. The procedure can take one to three hours, depending on the number, size, and depth of the fibroids within the muscle wall. Following laparoscopic myomectomy many women are able to leave the hospital the same day, although a one-night stay may be necessary. Because the incisions are small, recuperation is usually associated with minimal discomfort. After laparoscopic myomectomy, women usually return to normal activity within ten to fourteen days.

During this procedure a laparoscope (a thin fiber-optic device that transmits light and a video image) is inserted through a small incision, usually in the navel, to view the uterus. The image from the camera attached to the end of the laparoscope is seen on a video monitor. Two or three small (half-inch) incisions are made below the public hairline and instruments are inserted through these incisions to perform the surgery. The fibroids are detached from the uterus and removed. Following removal of the uterine fibroids, the openings in the uterus are stitched closed with the use of specially designed instruments.

Not all surgeons are trained in laparoscopic surgery; because of the small size of the incisions, removing uterine fibroids with laparoscopic myomectomy requires special training. Fibroids that are attached to the outside of the uterus by a stalk (pedunculated fibroids) are the easiest to remove laparoscopically. Many subserous fibroids (close to the outer surface) can also be removed through the laparoscope. There is a risk of leaving small fibroids untreated if there are multiple fibroids being removed by laparoscopic myomectomy.

Christmas here in Singapore has evolved a lot. When we first arrived here in 2007 (or was that 06), Christmas was not as fab as these recent years. In fact, our first Christmas here was quite sad. I remember not seeing much Christmas decors in Yishun (where I used to work).

Usually, we spend Christmas eve at a friend's house. They have decided to go home to the Philippines this year so we were left orphans (hehe). And for the first time, had to prepare the meal myself. And I sucked at it.

Couple of things that I learned this year:

Do not trust delivery services on Christmas eve. Arnold's DO NOT deliver. KFC took 2.5 hours considering they were quite near.
Go to the grocery early! It's super crowded plus everything is out of stock!
Buy nestle cream EARLY! Like a week before. Went to 4 Fair Price outlets, 2 cold storage and 1 shop and save outlet and they were all out of stock!
Buy in Fair Price or Giant. They charge way cheaper than Cold Storage.

In our family, we celebrate it at home with the whole family at around 7pm. Dinner is early in the province since we retire early at night too. I love seeing the kids open their gifts. I love the food that my mom prepares. It's been almost 6 years since the last time I spent Christmas eve in the province. As much as I miss it, my current situation prevents me from being there. But! With the internet, it's like I'm there. I get to see the kids run around. See the adults eat to till their tummy's surrender!

Christmas breakfast and lunch = left over food! But who cares.. it's SOOO good!

Taiwan business tycoon Samuel Yin, whose assets are reportedly worth more than $3 billion, has pledged to donate 95 percent of his wealth to charity after he dies, local media said Thursday.

The 60-year-old, who is one of the island's richest men, announced the pledge -- the biggest ever of its kind in Taiwan -- in an interview with Business Today, a Taipei-based Chinese-language weekly.

"I've mentioned this to my family, and they've all agreed with me," he told the magazine.

Yin heads the sprawling Ruentex conglomerate, whose business interests include textiles, property, insurance, hypermarkets and education.

He has not publicly disclosed the value of his assets, but the magazine put it at an estimated Tw$95 billion ($3.2 billion).

The details of his pledge are yet to be finalised, but he said the money could also be used to finance the establishment of an award modelled on the much coveted Nobel Prize.

Yin was not immediately reachable for comment.

Had a team Christmas poolside dinner at the Oasis in Grand Hyatt.

At around $70 ++ for the BBQ dinner, it was quite a good deal especially that it comes with free flow drinks (juice, margarita and beer). For drinkers, you gotta go and give it a try!

I LOVE the ribs and prawns! The gula melaka dessert was also a BOMB! For the main dishes, there were not much choices but 90% of them are good. So for me, this is quality over quantity! I love having BBQ without the sweat and the smell!

YUMMM!

If you are looking for a place to have good meal especially this Christmas.. I suggest give this a try! You won't regret it!

Fun Run

I recently joined a charity fun run for 5KM at the Marina Bay. I think I finished at the slowest 10%. Haha. I'm not really a runner. I'm such a klutz that I feel to my face after the finish point. Talk about humiliating!

Food was lesser this year. Prizes were less too. But... fun was just the same! Come and join next year!

Dinner was a disappointment. My hubby didn't eat it at all. He chose to open a can of tuna. Sad. sad. sad. Failures are raining all over me.

Most of my friends and their families are going home to the Philippines to celebrate Christmas. Hmmm.. it's beginning to feel like a very sad and empty Singapore Christmas! Wish I can go home too!

Malacanang lauds Fil-Am CNN Hero awardee

Two years after the victory of Efren Penaflorida in the CNN Hero awards, another Filipino has won the prestigious title.

Filipino-American midwife Robin Lim, whose advocacy include giving prenatal care and birthing services, was named as the 2011 CNN Hero of the year.

Lim, chosen by the public in an 11-week poll, bested nine other CNN heroes and will be receiving $250,000 for her cause, apart from the earlier $50,000 she got when she made it to the Top 10, CNN said in its report.

"We are very happy that the effort of one of our Filipinos has again been recognized on the international stage," said Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte.

"Mother Lim," as she is called, runs the Yayasan Bumi Sehat health clinic that also offers medical aid in Indonesia, where many families cannot afford care, Malacanang quoted CNN as saying.

In her acceptance speech, Lim said: "Every baby's first breath on Earth could be one of peace and love. Every mother should be healthy and strong. Every birth could be safe and loving. But our world is not there yet."

I've been a bad piggy. :( I was so bitter we lost the decor contest today. I felt we gave it our all. And I honestly felt and thought we looked better. Yet we lost because our boss picked the other team. I think at one point I booed 'em. Yeah yeah. I'm sorry. I couldn't control my emotions.

But now that I'm feeling a little better. More sober perhaps? Why did we lose?

[1] We lost because we were lacking in colors. But hey we Asians like Snow and white christmas. My white boss is probably sick of white christmas and looks for something exotic?

[2] Our coverage is way bigger. I think it should be taken into consideration next time.

[3] Our team work was lacking compared to the other team. Yeah they are smaller team but judging from percentage of team work they got perhaps 85% compared to our 10%.

So yeah. At the end of the day. I understand why they won.
